A crisp, sunny Santa Cruz day was the perfect setting for West Valley's 5-0 sweeps of De Anza and College of San Mateo Friday. The Vikings improved to 3-1 in the Coast Conference, setting up a crucial quad against Hartnell (8-4, 2-1 Coast) and Monterey Peninsula (5-3, 2-1) Friday (3/14) at the West Valley Beach Volleyball Complex.

Against De Anza (3-11, 0-4), West Valley's 2's (Emma Landaverde/Rachel Sanchez) and 4's (Jess Watanabe/Rowynn Funk) rolled to straight-set sweeps in the opening wave. Every match of the second wave went three sets. WVC 1's, Sophie Ehret and Francesca Zanotti took their opening set 21-7 over De Anza's Ester Alper and Alex Yee, dropped set two 21-15 and then raced out to a 15-9 win in the third. Viking 3's Kyra Bito and Julia LaPierre dominated their 3rd set with Leslie Frausto and Emi Perez, 15-4. 

The 5's match between WVC's Sianalai Tautolo and Anahita Miahnahri and De Anza's Ava Hudnut and Jocelyn Balderas was the best match of the day. Tautolo/Miahnahri took set one, 21-17, but lost a hard-fought 21-18 2nd set. Set three was a roller-coaster ride, much like the nearby Giant Dipper. Hudnut/Balderas had a 9-6 lead that soon fell victim to a 7-0 run and a 13-9 lead for Tautolo/Miahnahri. It ended 15-10.

CSM only fielded three pairs for the afternoon match. West Valley recorded straight-set sweeps in the 1's and 2's, while LaPierre and Watanabe took their 3's match with a 15-3 3rd-setter.
