Entire Viking squad qualifies for 3C2A state tourney

All six members of West Valley tennis qualified for the 3C2A State Championship Tournament after a strong showing at the Coast Conference Championships at Ohlone College in Fremont. Three Viking doubles teams - Faith Son/Isabella Pacini-Pinto, Kristina Gazaryan/Ruth Herrera-Flores and Bailey Sylva/Pranjal Goyal - along with Son, Gazaryan and Pacini-Pinto in singles, will head to the Ojai Tennis Tournament April 23-27.
"I'm really excited to see the entire team compete next week at Ojai," said Viking coach Lauren Hickey. "What a great way to cap the conference season. There are a lot of talented tennis players in the Coast this year, so it was awesome to have our group be so successful in the tournament."
Gazaryan, after a convincing run through the rounds of 32 and 16 and the quarterfinals, made it all the way to the singles final, where she fell to Chabot's Mina Koloski.
"It is awesome to see the inprovement Kristina has made from last year to this season and this tournament," said Hickey of Gazaryan. "Her run to the finals is a great accomplishment for her."
Son won a memorable 2-6, 6-1 7-6 (4) quarterfinal match against Cabrillo's Stella Davidsdottir, before dropping her semifinal match to Koloski. Pacini-Pinto advanced to the state tourney with a win in the round of 32 and a hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 R16 loss to Cabrillo's Nikka Besch-Lobastov.
In doubles, Herrera-Flores/Gazaryan and Son/Pacini-Pinto made it all the way to the quarterfinals, while Sylva/Goyal qualified for states by advancing to the round of 16.
