WVC wins "Battle Of Vikings" to advance to Super Regionals
Kai Laxa goes airborne to throw out a DVC runner
West Valley won the "Battle of the Vikings," otherwise known as the 3C2A NorCal Regionals, with a pair of victories over Diablo Valley last weekend at Valhalla. The 7-3 and 15-0 wins send No. 2-seeded West Valley into the 3C2A NorCal Super Regionals May 8-10 at Valhalla. Joining West Valley (33-9) in the double-elimination tournament are No. 7 Skyline (31-10) and No. 14 Los Medanos (28-13). The winner advances to the Regional Finals May 16-18.
Friday's 7-3 win was highlighted by a three-run West Valley eighth. West Valley was up 4-1 through four, but Diablo Valley (16-25) closed to within 4-3 on a three-run homer from Zac Goldenberg in the sixth. West Valley added three proverbial insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI-fielder's choice from Jordan Hall, an Isaac Hawthrone RBI-single and another RBI-fielder's choice, this time from Kenji Colston, that made it 7-3. In the top of the ninth, WVC reliever Bryce Berry struck out Elijah Scott and Joey Rusca to end it.
Eric Altmark, Colston and Hawthrone all finished with two hits, while Colin Spear joined Colston and Hawthrone with two RBI each. Starter Adrian Valdez (7-1) went 7 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while walking two and fanning two.
Saturday's 15-0 game two was a Viking, as in West Valley, slugfest. Altmark, Drew Dillehay, David Estrada, Kai Laxa and Spear each had two of West Valley's 15 hits that included six for extra bases. Estrada and Spear clobbered two-run and three-run taters, repectively, while Altmark, Dillehay and Spear all had doubles, and Charlie Kuwada added a triple. Spear had five RBI, and Altmark and Estrada each had three.
The West Valley Super Regional gets underway Thursday (5/8) at 11:00am with Skyline taking on Los Medanos. West Valley will battle the game-one loser at 3:00pm.
