DeJesus, Cruz carry Vikings past Glads
Raylene Cruz clubbed a 5th-inning solo homer at Chabot
Andrea DeJesus smacked a three-run homer and an RBI-double to lead West Valley to an 11-3 five-inning win at Chabot Tuesday. The Vikings (32-2, 9-1 Coast) also got a home run from Raylene Cruz, her first collegiate round-tripper.
West Valley scored twice on wild pitches for a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. The Gladiators (2-28, 1-9) leapfrogged the Vikings in the home half of the inning on Katrina Longoria's three-run homer. The 3-2 lead didn't last a half inning, as WVC answered with two in the 3rd on a DeJesus SAC fly that brought home Alina Perez, and a Rylee Gomez single that scored Tyla Arbuckle. The Vikings put the hammer down an inning later.
Perez laced a two-run single and DeJesus followed with her three-run dinger that drove in Arbuckle and Perez to give the Vikings a 9-3 cushion through three. Cruz opened the 5th with her solo shot, and DeJesus went to work again four batters later with a two-out, RBI two-bagger that sent Leah Grifall to the plate. Chabot succumbed to a double play and a ground out back to the circle in the bottom of the 5th to end it two innings early.
DeJesus finished the day 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs, while Arbuckle went 2-for-3 with three runs and her state-leading 40th stolen base. Anna Bean (3-0) earned the win in the circle, hurling four innings of two-hit, three-strikout shutout softball.
The Vikings travel to Fremont Thursday (4/10) to take on the always-tenaciuous Ohlone Renegades (14-20, 2-7). First pitch is 3:00pm.
