Epic 1st inning helps Vikings smash Seahawks
Sadie Heming slides into 3rd with a 4th-inning leadoff triple
West Valley's vast offensive potential was on full display in a first inning for the ages in the Vikings' 13-1 drubbing of Cabrillo Tuesday at Viking Field. The run-rule win was WVC's 16th of 2025, and the Vikings (34-2, 11-1 Coast) scored in double-figures for the 17th time. But it was Tuesday's opening frame that will be remembered.
Let's recap West Valley's 1st. Try to keep up.
First, the first-inning facts: 16 batters, 11 runs, seven hits, three stolen bases - including a run-scoring double steal, an inside-the-park home run, a two-run home run, and a three-run home run. The Seahawks (4-30-1, 1-11), who grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st, used three pitchers in the bottom of the 1st to try to stop the Vikings, to no avail.
Leadoff hitter Tyla Arbuckle got things started...emphatically. The Seahawk defense was drawn in for the West Valley center fielder, who may lead the 3C2A in infield hits. With the Cabrillo outfielders on the lip of the infield, Arbuckle lined a shot to right-center and trotted home before the ball had even been returned to the infield. Things were just heating up for the Vikings.
Andrea DeJesus was plunked on the next pitch, Rylee Gomez singled and Brianna Chambers Lee blasted a a three-run shot over the rightfield fence that everyone just turned and watched. The lead was now 4-1. Jasmine Mixco and Raylene Cruz walked, followed by a Makayla Villapando SAC fly to right that brought home Chambers Lee. Gabriella Diotalevi's two-out single scored Cruz to make it 6-1. Arbuckle walked and came home, along with Diotalevi, on a DeJesus grounder that was mishandled at 2nd. Gomez then made the score 10-1 with her 5th homer of the season, a shot to center that knocked in DeJesus. Chambers Lee singled, her second hit of the inning, and came home on a Cruz single. The hour-long inning ended 11-1.
Meanwhile, Viking starter Ashlie Nakano settled down after an uncharacteristic one-run, two-hit first and set the Seahawks in order in the 2nd and 3rd. Reliever Alysia Elizarrey entered in the 4th and held Cabrillo to a lonely single. Nakano picked up the win to improve to 10-0.
West Valley added two more in the 4th. Sadie Heming led off with a triple and came home home on an Alina Perez single. After Leah Grifall doubled, Ella Moser singled in Perez for the final 13-1 score.
Gabby Diotalevi, who was joined in the starting lineup by sister Adriana, Chambers Lee and Gomez each had two of WVC's 12 hits, while Arbuckle, Chambers Lee, DeJesus and Gomez all scored twice.
The Vikings head to Salinas Thursday (4/17) for a crucial contest against Hartnell (21-14-1, 9-3). First pitch is 3:00pm.
